May 7, 2014 Dunsford Kawartha Lakes announced they have confirmed case of Fifth Disease. Fifth Disease / B19 / Human Parvovirus / Slapped Cheek Syndrome are different terms people use for the same illness -Erythema Infectiosum. This is just one thing I discovered.  Who is at risk from Human Parvovirus?

Who is at Risk From B19 or Human Parvovirus?

Several groups of people can have dangerous anaemia complications from Human Parvovirus and will need to see a doctor right away if they may have been exposed . People at risk from Human Parvovirus include the following:

• People with anaemia, Parvovirus infection in people with anaemia may stop the production of red blood cells and cause an anaemia crisis. People with sickle cell anemia are at particular risk.
• Unborn children of women infected with parvovirus during pregnancy can need blood transfusions in utero to prevent miscarriage or stillbirth.
• People with weakened immune systems i.e. people who have AIDS or are having cancer treatments or using anti-rejections drugs after organ transplant.

Children rarely experience severe complications, and once they have it, develop an immunity.

What are Early Symptoms of Human Parvovirus?

Unfortunately, Parvovirus B19 is most contagious when there are few symptoms. It may appear to be allergies or a cold and starts with sniffles. Later in the illness a person with Human Parvovirus can develop a blotchy rash with bright red cheeks, which is where the name 'Slapped Cheek Syndrome' comes from.

What Should You Do If You Suspect Human Parvovirus?

Someone in your family been exposed to a confirmed case of Human Parvovirus? Do they have headache? Fever? Joint pain? Sore throat? You may want to keep them away from public places, and contact with family members who would be at risk from Parvovirus B19 complications.
